Why Choose MeshCAM over Mastercam

By almost any measure, Mastercam is the number one CAM program available. Because of this, users who are new to CNC software often look to Mastercam first when looking for a new CAM program. For some users this is the right pick, for others there are better options. Here are some things to think about when looking at MasterCAM

Mastercam does EVERYTHING

Being able to do everything is usually a good thing. Think hard about it though- how many things do you really need? Do you want to have to wade through all those features and functions just to get to the parts of the program that you do need?

MeshCAM does a few things and it does them very well. We try to include the features that benefit the most users possible without including edge cases that confuse more users that they help.

People offer training classes for Mastercam

While training classes are a nice option- that means that you’re looking at a program that is so involved that people need to spend weeks or months trying to learn it. How long will it take you to be productive?

We could offer training for MeshCAM but honestly, it would be tough to fill a curriculum longer than an hour or two. We’ve gone out of our way to make it easy to use so that you don’t need training.

You could buy a nice used car for the price of Mastercam

Mastercam is available with lots of options and in lots of versions. If you pick anything but the most basic version, it’s unlikely that you’re going to get a license to Mastercam for less than $10,000. If you need absolute control over your toolpath at any cost then this may be no problem. For most users, a number this big will need a lot of justification.

If you want Mastercam you’re going to need to talk to sales people

Buying a program like Mastercam is a big process- finding a reseller, maybe meeting with them, then requesting trials and quotes. Now they’re going to be calling you every three days to ask for that sale. This is a process to be tolerated but not enjoyed.
